"If you are going to be an elder, you need to understand that true magic isn't about power. Its something that's a part of us, something that's literally in our blood."

Review:

I honestly don't know what to say. I wanted to love this book, I really did but the story just went off hand for me. I just don't know what happened to the plot, the characters, the world building. I don't get it at all.

The plot was stagnant, barely anything happens except for the bickering between Amari and Zelie. The inner conflicts of the main characters didn't really add much to the plot. Like the book revolves around the war between the royal family and the few remaining maji left but there as no clear outline as to what the endgame for the book should have been. The world building and the magic system has no rules anymore! Why do people have magic? Oh the Gods gave them as gifts so might as well have them. No!! There was a reason why the maji had powers and not every human, mundane and muggle out there!

The character development!! Oh gosh it hurt so much I wanted to cry. Amari was one of my favourite characters and to see her character development just ruined, i don't know, i really just wanted to cry especially towards the end (not going to talk about cause spoilers).

And the half baked romance again! Zelie of course gets a new love interest but I wasn't really interested in that. And Amari with Tzain (Zelie's brother). I mean in the first book they were all cute but in this I don't really see it. It feels like Tzain makes an appearance only when Amari needs comforting (basically Amari's love interest). I mean he is the brother of the main character for God's sake why didn't he have a better role and character arc?

Honestly the book was a disappointment from the start but the biggest downfall was Amari's decision towards the end and the ending of the book. like what!? wat? wut? wha?

I know I am still going to read the third book of this trilogy but I am not really that excited for it. This is really saddening because it had so much potential, the world and the story it could have been so much better :(
