Review :

Kingdom Cold was an interesting take on the fantasy action world with diverse characters and a good storyline.

We start off with Charlotte being plunged into a world she doesn’t want to be a part of, getting married to an unknown prince in order to save her kingdom. She is forced into it at only the age of 16 so it is quite understandable.

But of course it isn’t simply marriage and an alliance solving the whole battle, because the war gets worse and the kingdom is about to crumble. Because of this charlotte and young is thrust into a series of adventures that test their trust for each other and their willingness to protect their kingdoms and each other.

I found the story pretty interesting and the character development was good as well. I especially loved the plot twist at the end, it was something I never even thought of connecting and it was very well done I think. And the fact that the characters were so young and to be out through situations like this was traumatising (sorta reminded me of ‘The Hunger Games’).

The only thing that I didn’t like about this book was that it was too fast paced. Like so many things happened so quickly, I think if it was given time to develop the story would have been so much greater. Would definitely recommend if you want a quick action fantasy novel.

One of the main aspects of this book was the diveristy of the kingdoms. There was the Western and Eastern Kingdoms that were inspired by real world historical empires. There wasnt much information so this was a bit tough but it was enough to draw some similarities with the fantasy kingdoms and the real world ones.

  • Eastern Kingdom - Vires

Prince Young is described to have dark hair and almond shaped eyes. Anyone can actually have almond shaped eyes but it is more common in Asian countries.

The woman in this kingdom are described to have white skin, red lips and long glossy hair and for some reason instead of reminding me of Snow White (who is European) it reminded me of the Korean or Japanese women I find in those historical dramas.

At one point in the story Prince Young also mentions how uncomfortable he is in the 'military style jacket' he wears during a dinner party at Besmium and much prefers his 'loose flowy gowns' from back home. He could very well be refering to the kimono or the hanbok (depending on which ever East Asian country the author drew the most inspiration from).

  • Western Kingdom - Besmium

The people in this country are mostly brown toned or fair skinned. Before the assumption that brown skin means Asian comes up, the Western world also consisted of countries like Africa, South America where brown skin tones were prevelant.

There is also a mention of a blonde lady (Milly) and a blonde prince (Emmett) in the story. Blonde hair colour is a majority in European and Western countries.

And agin the mention of the military style jacket a s piece of clothing that Prince Young wore as opposed to the flowy clothes.

About the Author

Can we talk about the Disney Princess vibes that she is giving off here 😍💖

Brittni Chenelle currently lives in Seoul, Korea which inspires her multicultural fantasy books. Her favorite genres to read and write are young adult fantasy, young adult romance, fairytale retellings, and young adult dystopian novels. She’s very passionate about equal representation and makes a point to include characters from different backgrounds and cultures in her fantasy stories.

Here are five fun facts about Brittni:

1. She lives in South Korea. It’s true. She does most of her updates in the morning or at night to account for the time difference. She also infuses most of her novels with her observations about Korean culture.

2. She’s a Type 1 Diabetic. She uses an insulin pump for survival and refers to her diabetes as “Beetie” which is what inspired her children’s book “Life with Beetie”. When she wants something from her parents she tells them, “My Beetie hurts.” It’s a trick that has never failed her.

3. She doesn’t really BELIEVE in fiction. Despite all the; Dragons, Elves, and Magic present in her novel “Involuted the Tale of the Red Ribbon Tree”, Brittni INSISTS that it’s a true story.

4. She’s OBSESSED with dark chocolate. She made me put that in and would also like me to inform you (on an unrelated note) that her birthday is in May.

5. Sorry guys, she’s married. If you ask her, she’ll tell you her husband saved her life but every time someone asks “how?” she gives a different reason. I’ve overheard her give about 4 different reasons, but I bet she has more. He must be an amazing guy.

Go give her some love 💜
