(blurb from goodreads)
Long before she was the terror of Wonderland—the infamous Queen of Hearts—she was just a girl who wanted to fall in love.

Catherine may be one of the most desired girls in Wonderland, and a favorite of the unmarried King of Hearts, but her interests lie elsewhere. A talented baker, all she wants is to open a shop with her best friend. But according to her mother, such a goal is unthinkable for the young woman who could be the next queen.

Then Cath meets Jest, the handsome and mysterious court joker. For the first time, she feels the pull of true attraction. At the risk of offending the king and infuriating her parents, she and Jest enter into an intense, secret courtship. Cath is determined to define her own destiny and fall in love on her terms. But in a land thriving with magic, madness, and monsters, fate has other plans.

Review :

So this book was good and bad at the same time for me. Basically the story is about how the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll came to be.

Lets talk about the good first shall we.

The baking. Cath here is an amazing baker at Hearts. All the description of food and cakes actually got my stomach growling so I would say please read this book with some snacks (preferably baked goods) in hand.

The descriptive writing. I liked Marissa Meyer's writing in the book for some reason. It was a bit different from the Lunar chronicles because on here it was more descriptive I feel like.
The Jabberwock and the twist. Yes the 'Jabber -baby- wocky' makes an appearance and I think this was the only actiony bit of the story that I loved.

The nonsense. Of course its an Alice in Wonderland prequel so you do expect some nonsense-y things. However I wished there was more. One of my personal favourites was the riddles and 'Why does the raven look like a writing desk?'

Okay now onto the bits that I didnt like about this book.

Cath. She is the main character and although in the beginning she is a strong woman who wants to be independent and open up a bakery of her own, she soon becomes a whiny lady just because she is to marry the king.

And speaking of the king, okay so he wants to marry Cath and he even proposes to her but I didnt really see any other reason as to why he proposed except for the fact that she bakes him his favourite treats. Like there was no love, I believe.

And because the king and Cath were in a courtship it was bland. like all cat did was whine about how much she didnt want to marry the king and how much she wanted to be with Jest, the King's joker and the love interest.

Now if this is supposed to be a forbidden love I feel like there should have been more emotions and risky events (There was two though). Like the two barely interacted in like a 400 page book I am sure there scenes together would be around less than a hundred pages.

The reason why I think there should have been more was because according to the blurb of the book "Long before she was the terror of Wonderland—the infamous Queen of Hearts—she was just a girl who wanted to fall in love." and so if she was just a girl in love the love story should have been one of the strong points of the story.

But it wasnt.

Also her stupid decisions which not only ruins everything but also takes away from how she became the Queen of Hearts. It made it more obvious and so I didnt really enjoy the last chapters of the book

But I guess I did sort of liked the book so I would recommend it to people. Just not as excitedly as I would the Lunar Chronicles.

Queen of Thieves
pc : author of the book

A tale in which a thief with a double life grudgingly becomes a hero.

Liana Mason has a life anyone would envy. Rags to riches. Pauper to princess. Nobody suspects that the once orphaned girl grew up to be the city's most notorious thief.

But that's what she is - a con artist, a thief, a criminal. It's what she's been for a long time. Something that was once a method of survival became a source of pleasure along the way. Even having all the money in the world didn't change that.

Most her life, Lia walked the line between good and evil, never crossing over to either. The line was blurred, her morals skewed, the rules broken. But through it all she was never seduced by either side.

But when an assassin arrives in her city with ill intentions, the thief's life is no longer in her hands. With her world spinning out of control, she's forced to play a role she never imagined she'd choose.

Hero.

A Robin Hood retelling.

Review (sort of) :

Absolutely loved this book. And I can't say much else because I can't remember the points exactly because I read this earlier on and since it's on wattpad, it's online, so I can't really make notes. I wish I did though because there were a few things I wanted to discuss but completely forgot :(
