Young Adult Tropes I am fed up of
We all have those common tropes that we are fed up of reading in books or watching in movies/tv series. Some of them are so commonly used that when you hear that a particular book/movie has them you just dont want to read it. Here are some of mine.
A quick note: some of these could be your favourite tropes and its alright if you like them. These are just my opinions and you are entitled to your own. And now that thats been said, let's get on with it.
Love Shapes
Honestly I am fed up of all sorts of love triangles, squares and octagons because its way too common. I wish there were more books about a wonderful, beautiful romance between two characters rather than introducing a third one. Or atleast give the second lead a chance. Most books introduce a second male/female lead and they are barely acknowledged and its so obvious that the main guy/girl gets together with the other main guy/girl.
Love at first sight
Or insta love.
Enough said.
I absolutely hate this. I dont think that you can fall in love with a random person in like two days or something ridicilous like that. Not very common these days but it's still there and so it's annoying.
I am not into romance but in the YA fantasy/sci fi books that have them a slow burn romance without a love triangle would be very nice for a change.
Rapunzel Syndrome
The poor main character who is a long lost princess. It was an interesting concept before but now its way too common. Again all poor MCs who have absolutely nothing special or are too kind and nice are actually long lost princesses who are either kidnapped or hidden away for some protection/greater good purpose. Or even because they were given away for adoption or something. I also call this the Cinderella Syndrome where the poor/unspecial MC marries someone of importance and becomes a princess or a queen. They cannot just fall in love with a commoner or a guard, no they manage to capture the attention of the higher ups just by being the person who is different from everyone else just because they decided to sneak to a particular scenario and had to be on guard.
But if this were to be applied to male MCs I think it would be sort of interesting (if pulled off correctly) because I have yet to come across a book with a poor/unspecial male MC who is a long lost prince.
The Chosen One
Very into ten to the power a zillion times common. Usually in fantasy/sci fi stories they have a chosen one and its always obviously the main character. Like only this person can defeat the evil. Only this person can save them all from destruction. I get it but I would love to read a chosen one story from the point of view of a side character. Basically the side character is the main character and someone they know or dont know is the chosen one. It would be an interesting take dont you think.
Harem
A sub topic of love shapes you could say. where all the boys love the female MC or all the girls love the male MC. I get it, when there is someone hot/handsome/pretty they wold fall for them but thats lust/attraction. Not true love. I hope they can differentiate between that.
Blood is thicker or so you thought
It's when the parents/family are non existent like the main character can go for days without going home and when they finally do the family/parents arent in the slightest bit bothered. Maybe in some cases there are people like that but in most cases I am pretty sure if you went missing for like a week they would have called the police.
Blinded by
This is when the main character thinks that they are not beautiful at all and they are convinced that they are 'plain' when in reality (or according to every other character in the book) they are beautiful and has a great body and in the case of girls can eat whatever she wants and still not get fat
I can be diverse too
These days with the #weneedmorediversebooks trend I feel like authors just casually throw it out there that a particular character is black, asian or any other from a minor community. Like it has no relevence to the story at all and that frustrates me because they - we are also people and we deserve proper representation in books and media. Or if they really wanted to have a character like that then they can subtly have one instead of going smack bang into the reader's face for no other reason than to make their book 'diverse'.
The alpha's mine
All those werewolf stories where the main character somehow becomes the mate of the Alpha or is the next Luna/Alpha of their pack. Very overused. And I hope someday I would be able to read some books on werewolves with different takes because, although common, the mythology surrounding this is actually very interesting.
Speedy Gonzales
How does an amateur who just became some saviour or chosen warrior learn how to kick ass in less than two hours? Forget quick learning or the innate ability to grasp things quickly. If the most experienced person in that particular world cannot master an ability which takes 47 years how in the raspberry cheesecake does the main character do it in 47 minutes. This is something mainly in action/fantasy/ sci fi books.

So far these are the tropes that I have come across and am extremely tired of. Some of these can be nice if written well but I still think there are more interesting tropes out there that can be explored. Let me know what your disliked tropes are.
With love,
