From Dusk till Dawn

The sun is one of the most beautiful creations of God. I don’t know why but I have always been attracted to it. You are now thinking ‘Is this girl crazy?’ (Well maybe I am). But honestly, putting aside the sweltering heat it brings to the weather here in Sri Lanka, I love the sun the most during its birth and death (Also the only times I love it).

I have lived by the sea all my childhood until I moved to the middle of a jungle, as I call it, after I became legal. And so, I was always watching the sunsets for as long as I could remember from the balcony in the room or from the rooftop.

The sunset everyday was different.

Sometimes it would be sheltered by the clouds during which the white fluff would change colours every minute till the sun dipped deep into the horizon. Oh, how beautiful the colours from orange to pink to purple to the dark blue night. The transition was so amazing that it would leave me breathless until I remembered that I had to click a picture and fumbled about the buttons on the camera before managing to take a picture that doesn’t even make it look half decent.

Then there were those sunsets where not a single cloud would be seen. Only the golden globe slowly going down to kiss the edge of the ocean turning the blue-sky orange. The sea would sparkle with the light and then quiet as a mouse disappear into the darkness.

But my most favourite of all sunsets would be where the clouds are dramatically spread across the sky and the sun a little above the ocean, shining in this brilliant orange glow making the ocean look bluer than ever before.

The clouds a tinge of grey, and the ships being illuminated against the light.

And suddenly the surprise from above, a crescent moon like a Cheshire cat’s smile. That’s what I love the most. When the moon graces us with its smile and the sun takes its last breath on earth whilst I stand there breathing into the salty breeze and wondering when can I get another day like this.

The day I fell in love with sunrises was after I moved to my new place. Yes, the one in the middle of the jungle. When I came here I thought I would never get to see another sunset again but lo and behold I get up one morning and see the sun rising before me. Like seriously because my balcony is directly in front of it.

It was so beautiful how the dark night slowly turned orange and then blue. The exact reverse of a sunset (duh). I loved how the twinkling stars faded in the light and that first ray of sunshine peaks from above those buildings and trees. How the sun slowly climbs up the ladder.

My biggest amazement is how the sky changes colours here. From dark blue to pink to orange to light blue. And sometimes how there are clouds and they would be this bright pinkish orange and slowly fade to become a white fluff.

I love the cool morning air and hearing the birds chirping when the sun begins to rise. It’s so refreshing and it’s what made me into a morning person. Honestly now I can’t say whether I am a night owl or a morning person because I am up at both times. (But let’s talk about those extremities another time)

(once i find the pic ill post it)

Now just because I moved away from the sea it didn’t mean that I didn’t get to see the sunset. Sometimes I can see beautiful sunsets from the rooftop or from the balcony at the back of my house, and I have seen some gorgeous ones here. However never more beautiful than the ones at sea.

What are your thoughts? Do you prefer the sunset or sunrise? Also has anyone ever seen a sunrise from the ocean or in between mountains? It’s one of my wishes. Hopefully one day I will be able to.

Till next time,

p.s. all pictures used in this post are mine :)
