The most basic way of understanding depression is the fact that you are not sad because mama scolded you or that you got low marks for a test. You are sad for no particular reason, you cannot even explain why and that is one of the worst kinds of sadness.
Sometimes you know you are going to be okay but you still feel awful. Sometimes you know even though there are many who love you, you feel unloved and it feels like your just a bother to them. There are times you want to do what you love to do, for example reading or writing, but you just dont feel like it. You just dont have the energy to do it. And then there are times where you want to get well but you just cant seem to get there.
With depression you feel severely overwhelmed with everything and even the smallest of tasks could make you want to breakdown and cry. You feel exhausted just pretending to be happy infront of others. Just replying with an "am tired" instead of an "I am going to breakdown and cry out loud" when asked "are you okay?"
Depression isnt at all how people put it nowadays. It isnt about that pretty girl's face whose mascara was ruined by a few tears or about that boy who listened to sad songs most of the time. It's not wanting to talk to people but also desperately needing that attention from someone. It's not wanting to eat anything since last night but also cleaning out the food from the fridge because your apetite had built up. It's that frustrating feeling where you really want to enjoy something and be normal for once but you cant. You cant because your head is exploding from the thousand irrational voices screaming in your head about how ts not all worth it. about how you are not worth it!
Depression isnt a black and white image. It is lonely and exhausting!
But you arent entirely alone. So when you think of making scars on your wrists, when you think of taking your life away think about this. You arent just going to take away your pain. you are going to bring more pain to others. Think! Your parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. They are all going to miss you so much. They'd miss you and remember you at all times. They will see your ghost every where they go. At home, at school, at your favourite restaurent. You will haunt them and they will wonder why you left them. So dont. Dont leave. You are stronger and smarter than all of this.
You can fight this! Yes you can!
Here are a few ways to help you when you feel too sad.
- Take a break. and by that I mean take a break from everything. from your social media to your school work. Take sometime to breath in all the good things and exhale the negativeness. Maybe go for a walk or make a dessert.
- Appreciate yourself. Breathe and observe yourself. Notice your thoughts and organize them. Use atleast 15 minutes to accept and appreciate yourself.
- Dont forget your medcines. If you do take antidepressants then please do take them. they are given to you for a reason.
- Try yoga!
- Sometimes even cleaning works! If your workspace/desk/room is cluttered. try organizing/cleaning it. it might boost your mood.
I hope that you all understood this month's episode of #MindMonsters. I am really enjoying this series.
